Holocene

The Holocene is a geological epoch which began at the end of the pleistocene (at 11,700 calendar years BP) and continues to the present. It encompasses the growth and impacts of the human species worldwide, including all its written history, development of major civilizations, and overall significant transition toward urban living in the present. There is a debate across scientific
fields that the Holocene is now over and we have entered a new period: The Anthropocene. This new epoch would retroactively begin at the time when human activity started to affect the global atmosphere. Most would argue that this moment was the industrial revolution.

In honor of the epoch before humans began contributing to the demise of the species, Tunkl had the word “Holocene” tattooed on her inner lip.

Nothing Human Loves forever includes a double wide coffin and a reading area. Viewers are invited to lay down in the coffin alone or with others. Tunkl also offered one-one-one, interactive performances inside the coffin. The performances focused on fear of death, loss and intimacy.

Nothing human loves forever is a suite of works that examine the individual’s relationship to dying within the greater reality that most humans are now contributing to the possible extinction of the species. Beginning with the Industrial Revolution through the Cold War and now with climate change it is almost impossible for the individual to exist without participating in structures and activities that contribute to the oppression and death of other humans and ourselves. With a deep interest in what this does to our psyches, society and the future, this work occupies a nostalgic tone of longing for the time before the Anthropocene and urges a acceptance and courage for the futures in which we will all die.
